Art and Design

Welcome to the Art & Design Department

Why study Art & Design?

The study of Art and Design nourishes, enhances and celebrates students’ creative, intellectual and artistic abilities. It stimulates and challenges students to realise their potential in a broad and relevant context. The overall educational development of the individual is central to the study of Art and Design.

Through studying GCE Art & Design you will have the opportunity to:
1. Develop your interest in and enthusiasm for art, craft and design;

2. Gain experience in working in a broad range of media;

3. Develop and enhance your creative, intellectual and artistic abilities

At AS, students build on their experiences at GCSE level by further developing and demonstrating their breadth of knowledge of art, craft and design.

At A2, the experience is more focused. Students conduct deeper theoretical and practical research into art and design topics of their choosing.

Students are encouraged to develop:
1. Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers;

2. Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement;

3. Independence of mind in relation to developing their ideas while refining their own intentions and personal outcomes;

4. An interest in, enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of art, craft and design;

5. Their observation and recording from primary sources;

6. The experience of working with a broad range of media, including traditional and new media and technologies;

7. An understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design processes and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate;

8. Experience of working within relevant and real frameworks and, where appropriate, make links to careers in the creative industries;

9. Knowledge, understanding and application of art, craft, design and media and technologies in contemporary and past societies and cultures.

Assessment Objectives

Students will be expected to demonstrate a response to all of the assessment objectives in each unit of assessment of the examination. The assessment objectives for AS and A2 are the same.
